National Coordinator Job Classification: One- to two-year full-time contract with benefits Position Title: National Coordinator, Sustainable Campuses Start date: flexible Application Deadline: rolling until filled Location: flexible, preferably Ottawa Salary: $29,250 - $32,000 depending on experience and funding Position: The National Sustainable Campuses Coordinator is responsible for the successful implementation of the Sustainable Campuses Project including coordination of the Sustainable Campuses staff team, resource development, external networking, fundraising, budgeting, and overseeing the planning and implementation of the Annual National Sustainable Campuses Conference. Project Overview: Sustainable Campuses is currently one of SYC's main focus areas and most successful national initiatives. The project seeks to inspire, inform, train, and support Canadian students in the pursuit of social and environmental change on and beyond their campuses. Sustainable Campuses aims to promote a systematic approach to change in campus academic and operational practices. It supports students' efforts to work within their educational institutions to create permanent, institutionalized mechanisms to ensure sustainability. In 2003, the Sierra Youth Coalition launched this innovative project to assist students, faculty and administration in increasing the sustainability of Canadian post-secondary institutions through improved understanding of their ecological, economical and social impacts. That is the goal of Sustainable Campuses. This project uses the Campus Sustainability Assessment Framework (CSAF) to assist universities in accurately understanding their socio-economic and environmental impacts. When implemented in combination with collaboration among different campus stakeholders, a sustainability assessment can allow members of the university campus community to develop solutions that address overarching structural problems that will not only benefit the university, but society at large. Sustainable Campuses offers support, resources and assistance for students working to measure sustainability and plan for change. This project is seeking to facilitate institutional and lifestyle changes at universities and in communities across Canada. Responsibilities - Support, assist and train the Sustainable Campuses Regional Coordinators; - Grant writing, budget management and maintaining funder relationships; - Coordinating strategic planning and visioning for the project; - Coordinate the annual National Sustainable Campuses Conference and support coordination for the regional conferences; - Resource development, including hiring contractors to develop needed resources; - Coordination of the volunteer Project Committee for Sustainable Campuses; - Coordinate the Sustainable Campuses 10-year evaluation project with the Evaluation Director; - Network with organizations and groups with similar missions and/or goals as Sustainable Campuses - Represent the project and SYC at conferences and event throughout Canada and the US; - Coordinate SYC's involvement in the US-Canada Energy Action Coalition (attend meetings and summits); - Communications with media, other groups, and within SYC. Preferred Qualifications: - BA or BSc in any field or equivalent experience - Excellent understanding of sustainability - Excellent understanding of Sustainable Campuses - Experience working on campus sustainability initiatives - Technical experience conducting sustainability and greenhouse gas assessments/audits - Bilingual (French/English) - Grant writing experience - Strong facilitation skills and understanding of consensus decision-making - Ability to work in a non-hierarchical environment - Strong analysis of anti-oppression and ability to apply analysis - Strong writing and research skills - Ability work in flexible work environment - Strong ability to multi-task - Experience in public speaking - Experience managing budgets and working with finances - Understanding of the youth environmental and social justice movement in Canada - Strong organizational and project coordination skills - Experience with management of staff, interns, and volunteers - Experience as a volunteer or in volunteer-driven organisations - Past involvement with the Sierra Youth Coalition Note: these are preferred qualifications. This individual will play an integral role in developing the project’s entire capacity, including initial outreach to schools in the region, writing and distributing materials, fundraising for the project, and training students, professors and administrators to increase the ecological and social sustainability of their establishment. The ideal candidate is a motivated, inspired and knowledgeable who has preferably had some experience with running student initiatives (social justice projects and environmental sustainability assessments), working with adolescents, project management (invoicing, budgeting, grant-writing, etc.) This is a demanding project with huge rewards and satisfaction. Project Overview: The Sustainable High Schools project is the adaptation of SYC’s highly successful Sustainable Campuses program for secondary-level schools. The project seeks to inspire, inform, train, and support Canadian students in the pursuit of social and environmental change by engaging them at school. The Sustainable High Schools project is a systematic approach by which students audit the sustainability of their school in collaboration diverse stakeholders and then make action plans towards improving operations, curriculum, practices and culture. It promotes students’ efforts to work within the systems of their educational institutions in order to create permanent, institutionalized mechanisms to ensure sustainability. Students lead the sustainability assessment of their school, using a specialized tool-kit for calculating ecological impacts and social justice issues in their establishment. Based on these measures, which are taken in collaboration with teachers, administration and grounds staff, students lead initiatives to improve the school’s overall performance on each of the indicators they measure. Responsibilities: 1. Implement the project at 15-20 high schools 2. Support students in recruiting volunteers and allies at their school to help oversee the project (students, staff, parents, teachers, administrators); 3. Train community members to conduct in-school audits, and provide guidance for processes and strategic planning; 4. Facilitate a network of the school groups working on the project; 5. Communicate the project’s progress with the National Coordinator (and/or SYC National Director) and participate on Sustainable High Schools Project Committee calls; 6. Manage the regional budget (includes invoicing, cash flow and ongoing financial reporting) 7. Develop project resources and materials 8. Assist in the organization of the Youth Action Gatherings (Summer camp where high school students will be trained for their role in Sustainable High Schools. 9. Support other staff members in the day to day national office administration 10. Organize an annual Sustainable High Schools regional conference 11. Responsabilités : 1) Mettre en œuvre le projet dans 15-20 écoles secondaires 2) Supporter le travail des étudiants responsables ainsi que leurs effort de recruitment pour le projet (étudiants, employés, parents, professeurs, administrateurs) 3) entraîner les volontaires – leur donnant les outils requis pour entamer l’étude de durabilité et l’implantation de solutions dans leurs écoles. 4) réseautage avec d’autres écoles et organisations impliquées dans le projet 5) communiquer le progrès du projet au coordonnateur national du projet (et/ou au directeur national de la CJS) et participer aux réunions téléphoniques du comité de projet. 6) Gestion des comptes et des budgets régionaux (maintien des dossiers financiers) 7) Développer les ressources et le matériel scolaire 8) Assister à l’organisation du camp d’été Regroupements Jeunesse Action (où nous formerons les étudiants qui mèneront le projet dans leurs écoles) 9) Organiser une conférence régionale annuelle 10) Participer aux opérations quotidiennes du bureau national. 11) Communications : site web, bulletin de nouvelles, etc. Qualifications requises : Bilinguisme oral et écrit – capacité de traduire d’une langue à l’autre à l’écrit Fortes connaissances en informatique Forte capacité pour gérer un projet de façon autonome Qualifications préférées: Expérience de travail/bénévolat dans les projets de développement durable de la Coalition jeunesse Sierra. Expérience de travail avec des adolescents Expérience en tant qu’employé ou volontaire dans les domaines de la justice sociale ou de l’environnementalisme.
