Group or Associate Members

Start an SYC group in your community!
  1. Register two individual paid members ($40 Total)
  2. Fill out one group form
  3. Everyone in the group becomes an associate member!

Associate SYC members can be active in SYC campaigns, events, and activities under the SYC name. They can be added to the SYC email list and submit articles for the homepage. They are not considered Sierra Club members and can’t vote in SYC or Sierra Club elections unless they become paid members. They will not receive regular SYC or Sierra Club mail-outs but should get the information through their group.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

I am part of an existing environmental group, can our group join the Coalition?

Yes! Two members of your group need to be paid SYC members and then fill in a very simple group form.


By joining the Coalition can we work on any issue that we want to?

Our only two restrictions are that the issue is:
  1. Related to the environmental and/or social justice issues
  2. Legal
SYC does not tell groups what issues they have to take on---but you should definitely let the SYC office know in case there are ways we can help you out! If you choose to participate in civil disobedience, you cannot do so under the SYC name.


By joining SYC do we have to change our name?

No way! The point is to tap into a national network, you can keep your autonomy and regional identity. There are basically three types of groups - Those that:
  1. Adopt the SYC name.
  2. Take action within the coalition.
  3. Participate in the coalition in order to use our resources.


Do we have to be students to start an SYC group?

Not at all. We have university, high school, and community groups. You also do not have to be a student to join any of the high school or university groups.


Do I have to be between the ages of 15-26 to be active within the SYC?

Nope. If you are part of a group (i.e. associate member) you can be any age. Also students of any age can be members of SYC. However, we ask that our volunteer leadership positions remain open for youth.
